Download our complimentary guide: The essential financial guide to returning to the U.K

Returning to the UK after living overseas can be a stressful process and requires careful consideration and planning.

In our experience, the majority of returning expats focus their attention on schooling, international haulage and banking arrangements. However, they often forget about their investments and insurance arrangements which can lead to significant and unexpected tax consequences in the UK.

We specialise in helping returning expats land in the UK in the best financial position possible. The key to a successful financial repatriation is the planning process and as it can take considerable time to restructure investments, something we believe should start at least 12 months ahead of the intended move date.

A few of the key topics covered in our guide include:

  • How long have you resided offshore? The length of time you have resided offshore can have an impact on your tax liabilities once you return to the UK. In some cases, it may be beneficial to delay your return to the UK if possible.
  • A full investment review should be conducted prior to your return to the UK; you could potentially save yourself significant sums in unnecessary UK income tax and capital gains tax bills.
  • Did you take out life insurance policies whilst abroad? If so, are they structured in the correct way to mitigate a potential UK Inheritance Tax liability?
  • Do you already own property in the UK and/or abroad? There is a lot to consider before your return to the UK and you could potentially avoid preventable UK capital gains tax.
  • Have you planned for foreign currency exchange? As you have accumulated assets and savings in a foreign currency, it’s imperative you manage your foreign exchange risk effectively to acquire as much Sterling (£) for your foreign currency as possible.

Antler Wealth Management has plenty of experience in helping returning expats just like you.

We understand the upheaval and the concerns that arise and we can help you every step of the way to ensure your repatriation is as stress-free as possible.
